Downing Street,
18th April, 1914.
I have the honour to inform you that a case has recently come to my notice in which a map of a Colony has been in course of preparation by the Geographical Section of the War Office General Staff simultaneously with the preparation of one in the Colony itself.
2. I have no intention of suggesting that work of this description should be transferred to the War Office in any case in which it can be satisfactorily performed locally, but as the General Staff have on many occasions rendered valuable assistance in compiling Colonial maps from materials in their possession it is very desirable that they should not be placed in the position of undertaking work of this kind to no purpose.
3. Any risk of such waste of good work would be avoided if the military authorities at home are duly apprised, through the Secretary of State, when the preparation of a map of the Colony or Protectorate, or of any areas thereof, is contemplated.
4. I shall, therefore, be glad if you will bear this matter in mind in the event of any proposal to prepare maps in the future.
Comes will be sent
